This paper aims to advance the observation of Internet communication by addressing issues of publicness on the Internet. First, we explained the background as to why many researchers focus on Habermas’ public sphere theory as a concept of publicness, and we examined major previous studies. Next, taking the findings into account, with regard to the interpretation of the construction of an Internet “public sphere” that assumes individual autonomy, we discussed the difficulty of making individual autonomy a condition for establishing a “public sphere” because of the Internet’s structural characteristics. Finally, by focusing on the aspect of the Internet that promotes the formation and activity of autonomous intermediate organizations, rather than on the Internet as a “public sphere” that relies on autonomous individuals, we discussed the possibilities of a new publicness of Internet communication. |
